The crossing points closed due to the elections create additional problems for the residents of Akhalgori
14.11.2024

The crossing points were closed in Akhalgori due to the parliamentary elections of Georgia, but they have not been opened yet. This decision was taken by de facto president Aslan Gagloev at the security council meeting, where he noted that the intelligence services and embassies of the Western countries were doing their best to get the situation in Georgia out of control during the parliamentary elections. Therefore, the security council made a decision to close the so-called borders[1] during the parliamentary elections. According to official reports, the Odzisi crossing point will not be opened in the near future, despite the fact that the elections are over (residents of Akhalgori and Java could cross the so-called border from the 20th to the 30th of every month).[2]

According to the de-facto president, the decision was made to ensure the safety of the population of South Ossetia and to prevent possible provocations from the pro-Western and nationalist radical forces of Georgia. The de facto authorities probably mean the pro-Western opposition by the "nationalist radical forces". It should be noted that during the pre-election period, the de facto authorities had a lenient attitude towards Georgian Dream and did not criticize representatives of the ruling party.

From October 25 to October 28, the state security committee was switched to the emergency mode. According to the contact persons of the Democracy Research Center, a large part of the population was going to go to polls, but they were completely deprived of this right. According to the locals, Georgian Dream had information about the oppositional attitudes of Akhalgori residents, which led to the decision to close the crossing points. The people of Akhalgori believe that Georgian Dream used their votes for its own interests.

In recent years, the restrictions imposed on the Tbilisi-Mosabruni crossing points have created serious social and economic problems for the local population of the Tskhinvali region. The number of those wishing to leave Akhalgori due to the deterioration of the health condition has increased significantly.

A new rule has been introduced for moving to Tbilisi for medical services, according to which, under the conditions of the closed road, the right to leave Akhalgori can be used only in urgent cases: stroke, cancer, death of a family member, funeral.

The closure of the crossing points has a negative impact on the economic well-being of the locals. Recently, prices in Tskhinvali have increased significantly. In particular, the prices of dairy products and meat products have increased. The price of firewood, which is used by the majority of locals for heating, has also increased compared to last year. The price of 8 cubic meters of firewood was 22,000 rubles last year, while this year it has become 27,000 rubles.
