On
August 1, at 16:00, the non-governmental organization Democracy Research
Institute held a meeting - "Georgia Chooses Europe!" in Tsnori.
The
speakers invited to the meeting - Nona Kurdovanidze (Georgian Young Lawyers'
Association), Nazi Janezashvili (Courtwatch) and Tatia Koniashvili (Democracy
Research Institute) spoke about the process of fulfilling the 9 priorities
necessary for the opening of negotiations after granting status to Georgia by
the European Union and the benefits of joining the European Union. The meeting
will be moderated by Ucha Nanuashvili (Democracy Research Institute).
In
December 2023, the European Union made a decision to grant Georgia candidate
status, which should have led to rapid reforms implemented by Georgia in 9
priority areas. The 9 steps defined by the European Commission are
multidimensional and their implementation requires complex approaches.
Instead
of fulfilling the priorities necessary for Georgia's accession to the European
Union, Georgian Dream introduced the so-called Russian law and on May 14,
contrary to the national interests of the Georgian people and the Constitution,
the law was adopted in the third reading.
The
Russian law has halted the European integration process of Georgia. The
European Council held on June 27, which brings together the leaders of 27
member states of the European Union, expressed serious concern over the recent
developments and democratic regression in Georgia. According to the leaders of
the EU member states, the adoption of the Russian law represents
backsliding in the process of
fulfilling the 9 steps given to Georgia by the European Commission, “de
facto leading to a halt of the accession process”.
The
project is supported by the European Union and is implemented by the Consortium led by the
Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung
(KAS), which unites the Economic Policy Research Center (EPRC), the Open
Society Georgia Foundation (OSGF) and the Independent Journalists' House
(IJH).
