The parliamentary elections of Georgia have been the subject of
discussion in occupied
Abkhazia as well. The victory of the Georgian Dream ruling party with 53.93% has turned out
to be acceptable and promising for the de
facto government of Abkhazia. An Abkhaz
politician, former de facto vice-prime minister, Adgur Ardzinba,
posted an article on the Telegram channel and his personal Facebook page, where
he wrote about the change in Georgia's foreign exchange rate. Adgur Ardzinba
drew "parallels" with historical events, saying: "Today, the West has weakened in the
region, and Russia, on the contrary, is slowly but surely regaining its leading
role. And Georgian Dream is
appearing on the stage in
Georgia with a new color."
The results of the elections have been the subject of discussions in the Abkhazian media as well. According to Abkhaz journalist
Izida Chania, "It is easy to guess from some phrases and behavior of the leadership
that the Abkhaz government is the supporter of Georgian Dream. It is difficult to say whether the closure of the state border with Georgia on October 23 was an
expression of political support or it served to keep portraying the Georgian opposition as the enemy…” In the section of the blog - "What should Abkhazia expect from the Georgian
elections?", Chania says that Georgia should not expect that Russia will give up Abkhazia in
exchange for new economic opportunities. According to Chania, Moscow is ready
to help Georgia, Abkhazia and South Ossetia in the process of normalizing
relations, if the "countries"
themselves are interested in it.
The above assessments and sentiments make us think
that closing the Enguri bridge for a week might not be the initiative of
the Abkhazian side alone. As far as the DRC contact persons have been informed, many residents of Gali had been trying to move to Zugdidi
to participate in the elections during the entire week, however, without
success. The Government of Georgia
has not made an official statement about the deprivation of the right to vote
for 30,000 people living in Gali.
According to
the preliminary assessment of the observation mission organized by the OSCE
Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, the elections in Georgia
were undemocratic and there was pressure on the election day, which raises
doubts about the possibility of free voting in the country. According to the
Georgian observation missions, the preliminary results published by the Central
Election Commission do not reflect the will of Georgian citizens.
