The return of opposition leader Adgur Ardzinba and his recent political statements concerning both domestic and foreign political developments are being actively discussed in the political space of Abkhazia.

According to available information, Ardzinba, who came second in the 2025 presidential elections in competition with the incumbent de facto president Badra Gunba, has re-engaged in political activity after a period of relative inactivity. His speeches and interviews in Abkhaz media have been described as a renewal of opposition activity.

Alongside these developments, discussion within the political sphere in Abkhazia has intensified regarding a possible realignment of the opposition spectrum, in which Ardzinba is seen as representing the moderate opposition wing.

In his public statements, Ardzinba has emphasised the need for internal political stability and the importance of dialogue between political forces. In his assessment, Abkhazia faces complex geopolitical challenges, where the deepening of internal divisions creates additional risks.

At the same time, Ardzinba has criticised certain Russia–Abkhazia economic and political projects, which have been described by parts of the opposition as unpopular. His positions are often perceived as an attempt to pursue a more independent political line, particularly on issues of sovereignty and domestic decision-making.

The Russian Federation plays a significant role in shaping internal political processes in Abkhazia, as was clearly demonstrated during the 2025 elections, in which Ardzinba, viewed unfavourably by the Kremlin, was defeated. It is noteworthy that his candidacy was deemed unacceptable in Moscow precisely because of his emphasis on sovereignty-related issues. It is also worth noting that the opposition figure was detained in Russia for two weeks following the elections, an incident which the Abkhaz opposition characterised as political pressure.

At the same time, ongoing public protests in the region, including against investment agreements with Russia, may serve as a facilitating factor for Ardzinba’s active return to political life.
