The de facto authorities of South Ossetia has launched the so-called "Family Reunification Programme”, which aims to relocate the local population to the areas controlled by the central government where their family members live. As a result, the local population will have to leave their homes in Akhalgori forever.
The de facto authorities of South Ossetia try to intimidate the local population with arrests and various charges in order to achieve more obedience.
Akhalgori is in danger of being left without the local population. The reason for the above is the new policy of the de facto authorities.
Today, we, part of the Georgian society, with initiative of Democracy Research Institute(DRI) and Human Rights Center(HRC) are launching a campaign "Georgians for Abkhazians and Ossetians" to help people living in Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia.
Part of the population living in the Gali district, who had been receiving the IDP allowance on the Georgia-controlled territory, is no longer able to receive the allowance due to the restrictions imposed by the de facto authorities in the context of the pandemic.
According to the information the Democracy Research Institute was provided with, no one is fully following the World Health Organization recommendations in occupied Akhalgori, which increases the risk of uncontrolled spread of the infection in the region.
During the pandemic, residents of the isolated Gali district are deprived of quality medical care and access to vital services.
