On July 17, the Democracy Research
Institute held a meeting - "Georgia Chooses Europe", in
Gurjaani.
The speakers invited to the
meeting talk about the process of fulfilling the 9 priorities necessary for the
opening of negotiations after the candidate status was
granted to Georgia and the benefits of joining the European Union.
In December
2023, the European Union made a decision to grant Georgia candidate status,
which should have been followed by the rapid implementation of reforms by Georgia in 9 priority areas. The 9
steps defined by the European Commission are multidimensional and their
implementation requires complex approaches.
Instead of fulfilling the priorities necessary for Georgia's accession to the
European Union, Georgian Dream introduced the so-called Russian law
and on May 14, contrary to the national interests of the Georgian people and
the Constitution, the law was passed in the third reading.
The Russian law has halted the European integration process of Georgia. On June 27, the European Council, which brings together the leaders of the 27
member states of the European Union, expressed serious concern over the recent
developments and democratic regression of Georgia. According to the
leaders of the EU member states, the adoption of the Russian law is a clear
setback in the process of fulfilling the 9 steps given to Georgia by the
European Commission and "will lead to the de facto suspension of
the accession process."
The agreement
“On the Deepening of Allied Cooperation”, signed in the Kremlin on 9 May between Vladimir Putin and the de facto leader of South Ossetia, Alan Gagloev,
implies the practical annexation of the region.
On 6 May, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe adopted its 13th decision concerning the conflict in Georgia, once again expressing its “unequivocal support” for Georgia’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.
“Georgian Dream” party is beginning to establish total control over the social sphere.
